Otto Bock is a leading prosthetics company. Vienna has become an important location for the firm because of its research and development, as well as assembly and distribution. Around one third of the 440 staff works in R&D. The headquarters of the group, which is in Duderstadt (Germany), employs 4,000 staff world-wide and has service and distribution companies in 40 countries.
    
Vienna is a competence centre for international research tasks, as well as being the headquarters for Western Europe. Vienna is close to important technological developments in the areas of bionics, neuro-prosthetics and mechatronics – the decisive future topics in the research area.
    
The range of products made in Vienna is varied and includes C-LEG®, a microprocessor-controlled knee joint, which won the 1999 Austrian State Prize for Innovation and DynamicArm®, an artificial arm, controlled by myoelectric signals, detected by electrodes on the surface of the skin of the wearer. Vienna distributes and sells different artificial arm and leg parts, leg braces, bandages, wheelchairs and accessories, as well as seating systems and cushions.
